The Outdoor Classroom's Story
Farallone View's first outdoor classroom was established in 2019. The FOFPTO received funding from San Mateo County and Recology to create an outdoor learning space on campus, complete with a greenhouse. Unfortunately, the space fell into disrepair during the pandemic. In 2021 the FOFPTO and Farallone View's administration began seeking funding to revitalize the space with a vision of creating an engaging, sustainable outdoor classroom. We consulted with various community leaders and received support from The HEAL Project, both in terms of guidance and as a reference for our grant applications. In 2022 we relaunched the classroom with 5 raised beds built and donated by an FV family. In 2023 the San Mateo County Office of Education awarded the PTO a Living Schoolyard grant, which funded a complete rebuild of the space. The benches and planter boxes were built by FV families, under the mentorship of Half Moon Bay High School. Materials were acquired using the grant funds, additional funding providing by the PTO and with gifts from Big Creek Lumber and Rice Trucking Soil Farm. In May 2023 students were able to visit the new outdoor classroom for the first time, planting sunflowers and pumpkins for the fall.
